British Columbia Declares Emergency as Wildfire Forces More Than 20,000 to Flee Okanagan Communities

British Columbia declared a provincewide state of emergency over the weekend after a fast moving wildfire destroyed homes and forced more than 20,000 people to flee communities along Okanagan Lake, with more than one hundred wildfires now burning across the province.
Premier David Eby announced the emergency Saturday as the Bald Range wildfire nearly doubled overnight to roughly 9,500 hectares, prompting evacuation orders for the entire community of Summerland, home to about 12,000 people, along with roughly 8,000 residents in and around nearby Peachland. Eby’s office confirmed significant structure loss, though officials said the damage could not yet be fully assessed since parts of the area remain an active fire zone.
Eby described the fire’s growth as a remarkable escalation in fire activity, saying the blaze became intense enough to generate its own weather system and lightning. Cliff Chapman, director of operations for the BC Wildfire Service, called conditions explosive and warned that other communities could face similarly fast moving fires in the days ahead.
Residents described chaotic scenes as they fled. Erick Thompson, an emergency official with the Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen, said he was forced to abandon the local emergency operations centre to evacuate his own family, driving south as traffic backed up around him. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said they are investigating a possible wildfire related death near Summerland, though hazardous conditions have so far prevented confirmation. Summerland also lost power and issued a boil water notice after untreated water entered the system when it bypassed the town’s treatment plant.
The provincial state of emergency gives British Columbia additional powers, including the ability to restrict non essential travel and secure accommodations for evacuees, Emergency Management Minister Kelly Greene said. About 1,500 firefighting personnel are battling the fires across the province, with reinforcements arriving from Mexico, Australia, France and New Zealand. Roughly 40 evacuation orders and 49 evacuation alerts have been issued so far.
Canada has faced increasingly destructive wildfire seasons in recent years, with hot, dry conditions and prolonged drought fuelling blazes across British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec this summer. Officials say the situation remains unpredictable, with difficult days still ahead for the province.
